A meditation in the night

“Because it is the God who spoke that out of darkness light should shine who has shone in our hearts for the out-shining of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us”.2 Corinthians 4

As I lay awake in bed in the middle of the night, I meditated and prayed concerning this verse. Why was I also given the deposit? Humanly speaking I can understand why others might receive it. Some exceed in nobility, in intelligence, in refinement, physical presence, in education, in amiability! My vessel has experienced lapses in courage, in judgment, in discipline, in tenacity! Yet I too have received the treasure!

"Treasure of grace,

In jars of mud;

That the excellence of power be from God…

Not from us!"

But one day the silver cord will be broken and this earthly house, a temporary dwelling, will fall. It will be replaced by a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens! Or better yet I might be one of those who will not sleep the sleep of death, one of those whose body will be changed that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body! To be free from externals: free from politics, free from race, free from economic theories, free from social constructs and “isms”. Free from internal sources of distress: free from that morass that is the human heart, that source of every evil, barely contained in some; kept down by training, socialization and self-control in many, but still erupting when least expected, to the dishonor of its owners, whether they are aware of it or not!

In that day the out-shining of the glory will not in any way or in any degree be occluded. Because we will see Him and when we see him we become transformed into his image. Now we bear the image of the earthly man Adam; then we will bear the image of the heavenly man, the Lord Jesus Christ, the blessed Son of the Father.
